Seventies Love

He drove a brown 70's Volvo, which his head nearly touched the roof of. He had a 70's hairstyle, sideburns and all, which caught my attention across the rows of traffic.

It was not an intentional style- nothing about him was intentional- simply sincere. He had probably had the same hairsyle since he was a kid growing up in the late 70's- at least that's about how old he looked.

The car was no-doubt the family car he'd grown up with. His parent's had bought it brand new in a decade when brown was the signature color for every season. He was a product of an era, and a comfortable product, at that.

He turned right, and headed down the same road as me, just ahead. As I passed, I saw a very pretty girl in the passenger seat. Her long, straight, shiny brown hair was pulled up into a messy knot. She had a wrap around her shoulders, no makeup, and a natural radiance. She was smiling.

They cruised down the highway, talking and laughing, and looking over at each other every few seconds. She had her hand on the back of his neck, and was looking over at him with wide sparkling eyes. She leaned across the seat to kiss him. They looked like they were in another world. Their world.

Looking at them was like witnessing a small, rare trueness in the middle of a superficial, disguised world. They were real. They were there to be witnessed, to be seen, to be understood, strived after, and inspired by. I couldn't help the huge smile that spread over me.

Now behind them, I watched as they leaned in to kiss each other, a sweet kiss that lasted at least five whole seconds. They car moved gracefully around the curve without faltering. It seemed to be guided, exactly on track, unnoticed by the two young lovers. The kiss went on and on. The car drove on.

As they speeded ahead, I had that sensation you get near the end of a movie, when you feel like jumping up, throwing a hand into the air and letting out a gleeful, "Wooo-Hoooo!!"
