Autumn

Autumn came in on a cool leafy breeze
just a couple of weeks ago now.
It rubbed my sleepy eyes and danced
cool and clean under my nose,
and I woke up as if from a dream
with a lingering feeling of somewhere
and a peaceful smile on my face,

And it no longer mattered that I couldn't see
what was around that corner up ahead...
There brushed a brisk sense
of adventure along my skin,
and goosebumps of anticipation,
and I felt my newness,
my changes, my growth,
myself.

Autumn came in, like something
I might have known once long ago,
and I wish it could stay
'til I've kissed it goodbye,
like so many things
I've pressed my lips against
that are already cold and gone...

I dreamed that everything could stay
until we'd loved it all we could,
and it kissed us back,
and when we were ready
we could watch it walk down
a long autumn road,
turning just before the bend
to smile and wave goodbye...
